The electricity industry is currently undergoing a transformation towards new, safer, more efficient and more sustainable consumption models. A key element of this evolution is Smart Grids. Have you heard of them: intelligent networks that incorporate digital technology into traditional grids?

This new electricity system allows for faster energy transition as they are bi-directional grids, i.e. they allow users (homes or businesses) to act not only as consumers, but also as small electricity producers, which reduces losses in the distribution networks.

What are the benefits?
  • They increase the quality and reliability of the electricity supply. Smart grids provide more information than a traditional grid, allowing action to be taken more quickly and effectively in the event of a system failure, helping prevent widespread blackouts. A Smart Grid can also have the capacity for self-supply.
  • It allows users to have full control of consumption and regulate it. These types of networks provide extensive information about real-time consumption and price to both the utility company and the user, helping users contribute to energy savings.
  • Smart Grids are capable of integrating renewable energy installations, thereby encouraging the use of clean energy and reducing carbon emissions.
A commitment to decarbonised energy models is expected to continue in the future to mitigate the effects of climate change and initiate the transition to a more sustainable lifestyle.

Many energy companies have already started transitioning to this new energy model. One example is the Spanish utility company Iberdrola, which has announced an investment of 60 billion euros by 2030 to consolidate this energy model.
