In the future, the number of electronic devices is expected to triple. This will require an increase in green energy, which does not pollute the environment. Until now, although renewable energy has been generated using sustainable natural resources, non-ecological materials are needed to extract the energy.

This is where a newly discovered energy called bio-solar or bio-photovoltaics comes into its own. This type of energy is remarkable for being 100% clean and renewable as it uses plant photosynthesis to generate the energy.

Energy from seaweed

After repeated investigation, a group of Cambridge scientists have recently discovered a way to use algae, natural light and water to generate 100% clean energy that can be used to charge electronic devices. Algae photosynthesis is used to generate bio-photovoltaic energy; the advantage of this method is that algae need CO2 to grow, which provides an added benefit, as this gas contributes to the greenhouse effect.

This type of energy is still at an experimental stage, but is expected to be easily reproducible, as the method uses inexpensive and recyclable materials

Energy from jellyfish

Another of the most interesting discoveries in the field of new sources of sustainable energy is bio-solar energy from jellyfish. Scientists have discovered that the fluorescent protein in this animal can be used to generate solar energy in a more sustainable way than current photovoltaic energy. How is this energy generated? The process involves converting the jellyfish’s fluorescent protein into a solar cell that is capable of generating energy and transferring it to small devices.

The main advantage of using these living beings as a natural energy source is that they are a clean alternative that does not use fossil fuels or require the use of limited resources. Although these two projects are still currently in the trial phase, the expectation is that this source of energy will be able to be expanded and become a green alternative for powering the type of small electronic devices that are becoming more and more common.
